Former presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has said that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has no right to impose a single candidate on Nigerians in the 2027 elections.
Nigeria Political Prism reports that Kwankwaso made the remark in a post on his verified 𝕏 handle on Thursday.
The former Governor of Kano State warned INEC that Nigerians must be allowed to freely choose their leaders, no matter the political parties they run under.
He wrote, “Today, I joined leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other committed democrats at a world press conference to strongly condemn the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC’s brazen and unacceptable partisanship.
“I fully endorse the position of the gathering: In 2027, Nigerians must be allowed to freely choose their leaders from a diverse range of political parties.
“The electoral umpire has no right to impose a single candidacy on Africa’s largest and most vibrant democracy.”
Meanwhile, former aide to ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, Salihu Yakasai, has asserted that Kano State and national leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including President Bola Tinubu, are jittery over the defection of Kwankwaso, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Yakasai made this known during an interview with Trust TV, stating that the impact of Kwankwaso’s move is not something that will materialise in the future but something already evident.
He said, “I don’t think it is going to change anything; it has already changed the narrative. It is not just the state that is jittery, but also the national leadership, including the president himself.”
Yakasai explained that recent political meetings and actions by key figures suggest that Kwankwaso’s defection has unsettled both state and national actors.
He cited the meeting between Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf and various political groups in Kano.
