Accord Disowns Ibadan Summit: “We Have Nothing to Do With Opposition’s Single Presidential Candidate Plan

 Accord says it did not participate in the national summit of the All Opposition Political Party Leaders in Ibadan, Oyo state, on Saturday.


At the summit, opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by David Mark, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), chaired by Kabiru Turaki, and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), announced plans to present a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.


But in a statement issued on Monday, Joseph Omorogbe, Accord spokesperson, faulted the organisers of the event for including the party as a member of the coalition.

“Accord is not aware of the coalition meeting and did not send any member to represent the party, let alone endorse the resolutions reached, including fielding a joint candidate in the 2027 presidential election. It is imprudent and unjust to include a political party in a coalition that it was not a part of,” the statement reads.


“The party strongly condemns the organisers for adding its name to the list of political parties that participated in the meeting, conscious of the fact that the national leadership of Accord was not involved in any way.


“Accordingly, the Barr. Maxwell Mgbudem’s leadership of Accord dissociates itself from the Ibadan political summit and warns politicians to desist from any action that will heat the polity ahead of the 2027 polls.”


Omorogbe said while parties are free to form alliances, such arrangements must be limited to consenting members.


“Political parties are free to form a coalition that will produce a joint presidential candidate, which should be restricted to the parties involved. Accord is embarrassed by the reckless action of the organisers and demands that its name be expunged immediately,” he said.



Omorogbe added that the party is focused on winning the upcoming Ekiti and Osun governorship polls and will not be “distracted by the intrigues of anti-democratic forces”.
