Adeola, in a press statement he personally signed on Monday, expressed worry over comments and opinions circulating on social media over the declarations of some members of the party to contest the gubernatorial seat under the umbrella of the ruling party in the state.
Recall that the the daughter of the former president of Nigeria, Iyabo Obasanjo, among other party members, had declared interest to contest for governor on the platform of APC, calling Adeola an opportunist in Ogun Politics, a statement forcing latter’s aggravated loyalists to lash out verbal attacks on social media.
“Yayi (Adeola) is an opportunist. He has never supported anybody from the West, yet now he positions himself as a contender. Politics is not about coming into a state just because it is advantageous to you. You have to build a connection with the people, understand that grassroots move around picking what benefits them, but that is not how sustainable leadership is built.” Obasanjo said.
However, the Chairman Senate Committee on Appropriation, who stated that although he had not officially declared his intention to contest for the number seat in the state, urged his supporters to resist the temptation of tongue-lashing other aspirants for the seat on social media.
He also dismissed the claimed of trading words with any contestant, stressing that had not at any time issued official statement regarding any aspirant’s ambition, nor responded to unprovoked media attacks on his person and political career.
Adeola said “I have noticed that many of my supporters who want me to run have been taking positions and made detestable statements against some aspirants in our party, All Progressive Congress, APC.
“For the record, I have not made any official statement regarding any aspirant’s aspiration or responded to the unprovoked media attacks on my person and my political career of service to the people,” he stated, adding that he had not authorised any of his staff to reply to such comments on his behalf.
The Senator who said that it was not in his habit to shade fellow contestants to pursue his political ambition noted that he is presently focused on delivering quality representation to his constituents in Ogun West and contributing to national development.
He said that the appeal became imperative to allow hitch-free primaries in the party as 2027 elections draws nearer, calling for unity among party members for APC to retain power after the forthcoming elections.
He therefore implored his loyalists supporters, as well as well-wishers to desist from attacking the person or ideals of any aspirant in his defence, saying such conduct could create unnecessary tension within the party.
” I am presently focused on serving my constituents in Ogun West Senatorial District, Ogun State and indeed, Nigeria. It is no in my character to derogate, demean or ridicule any of my fellow party members on the basis of their genuine aspirations. In view of this, I want to appeal to all my loyalists to desist from attacking the person or ideals of any aspirants, ostensibly in my defense or support” he added.
