A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emmanuel Ogigi, has said governors defecting from the opposition party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would not be able to survive politically within the party.
Naija News reports that Ogigi also criticised the administration of the APC, describing it as a government that failed to fulfil the promises it made to Nigerians.
He made the remarks during an interview on Arise News.
Speaking on the performance of the ruling party, the PDP chieftain said the APC had failed to deliver on its promises to Nigerians.
According to him, the party made lofty promises but failed in their implementation.
“They promise everything, they fail in everything. So I don’t consider them a government, but I do know that Nigerians cannot stand another term of APC,” he said.
Ogigi further warned that the country could not continue under the leadership of the ruling party.
“I don’t know how it’ll play out, but I do know that Nigeria can’t exist under APC,” he added.
The PDP chieftain described the APC as a “monster,” insisting that some politicians were determined to ensure that democracy thrives in Nigeria.
“APC is a monster. That’s why some of us are determined to see democracy thrive. I’m in this field because we cannot allow this monster to fester. So we’re determined,” he said.
Reacting to questions about governors elected on the PDP platform who have defected to the APC, Ogigi said such politicians were being pressured to join the ruling party.
However, he maintained that they would not be able to adapt to the political environment within the APC.
“They are being coerced to go there, but let me tell you the truth, they can’t fit in there. They will come back immediately. They can’t survive there,” he said.
Ogigi reiterated that the defecting governors would eventually realise that they could not thrive within the ruling party.
“Let me tell you the truth, our PDP governors going there cannot fit in, because what is going on there is only God that can explain it,” he added.
The PDP chieftain also spoke about the governors who have remained in the party, saying they had taken a firm position despite the challenges confronting the opposition party.
According to him, party leaders are working with the remaining governors to stabilise the party and overcome its current difficulties.
“You see the two left now have taken a position, I will respect them for that, and we are working with them to ensure that this seemingly disadvantaged position we entered yesterday, God will help us get out of it,” he said.
Ogigi expressed optimism that the party would overcome its challenges and work with other political actors to strengthen democracy in the country.
“And when we get out of it, we are very sure that we will do the needful and liaise with other like minds,” he added.
