2027: Why coalition talks will fail – Sowore

 A former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has expressed concerns that the current coalition talks among opposition parties will ultimately fail and even boost President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. Sowore gave this warning on Tuesday when he played host to Channels Television’s Politics Today, adding that the efforts lack vision and ideology. According to Sowore, the efforts lack vision and ideology and are preventing a genuine coalition of the oppressed from emerging. “It is what they [the coalition] are doing that will make it easy for him (Tinubu) to rerun and return to office. They are preventing the real, organic coalition of the oppressed from emerging. People are getting distracted — Nigerians actually think these guys are fighting for them,” Sowore affirmed. Abiola, who is the daughter of late President MKO Abiola, the winner of the 1993 presidential elections, further encouraged collective efforts in building a prosperous future for both the state and the nation, adding, “May the labor of our heroes past never be in vain. God bless Ogun State, and God bless Nigeria.”


 


Ogun State was created on February 3, 1976, and has since grown to become a key economic and political hub in Nigeria. The state has produced numerous notable figures who have significantly contributed to its development and the nation's cultural and political landscape.

INEC announces date for Ekiti, Osun guber poll

 The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed the gubernatorial election in Ekiti and Osun States for July 20 and August 8, 2026, respectively. INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu announced the new date during the swearing-in of six newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC) in Abuja on Friday. Mr. Yakubu said the primaries for the Ekiti election will be held between October 20 and November 10, 2025. He also noted that the final list of the candidates would be published on January 18, 2026, while campaigns will begin on January 21 and end 24 hours before the election. According to Mr Yakubu, the primaries for the Osun poll would be conducted from November 24 to December 15, 2025.
